Quite a lot has changed in British Columbia when it comes to residential building bylaws. Not only did the Agricultural Land Commission start allowing secondary dwellings on all ALR zoned properties, there has also been an aggressive push for Small Scale Multi-Unit Housing (SSMUH) by the Provincial Government. This resulted in all local governments being legislated to relax their density restrictions within most residential areas. The way each municipality interpreted the SSMUH requirements varied, but inclusion of garden suites and coach/laneway homes seems to be a common thread across most cities in British Columbia.
